Every legend has a teller. Sometimes it is a farmer by the hearth, sometimes a monk with an agenda, sometimes a film studio. Grey Tales goes looking for them.
What this is
Grey Tales is an English-language YouTube channel and podcast about folklore, mythology and historical hauntings. Most episodes are long, source-based stories about creatures and legends from Europe and further afield: from the Nachzehrer and the Strigoi to the trolls of Norway and the leprechaun of Ireland.
How an episode comes together
I start with the story itself, the way people told it. Then I go back to the oldest sources I can find: manuscripts, folklore collections, court records, and the scholarship built on them. Researchers, editions and dates are named in the episode and listed in the description.
Where scholars disagree, I say so. Not every mystery can be solved, and not every story needs a solution. But every one of them deserves the question of who told it, and why.
Who is behind it
I am Cris Frickenschmidt, and I make Grey Tales on my own: I research, write, narrate and produce every episode. Grey Tales started as the English sister of my German channel Blanker Horror. The episodes are not translations. I rewrite each one for an English-speaking audience.
Where to find it
New episodes appear on YouTube and as a podcast on Spotify and other podcast apps. Every episode, with a summary and sources, is in the archive.
